Nukumea Primary

A brief history

The school was first announced by the Government of the day in the 2018 Budget and was originally scheduled to open in February 2021. Delays in land purchase and consent requirements resulted in the school opening in temporary classrooms (on the permanent site) in February 2023. The students and staff moved into the new permanent buildings in January 2024.

Stage One construction is for 18 teaching spaces to accommodate up to 420 students and the Ministry projects the future roll to be in excess of 600. The initial build will include the full infrastructure including hall, library, and resource area.

Temporary Buildings

Our very first days as a school were spent on the site that would eventually become the car park of our permanent build. Teaching and learning took place across three separate classroom relocatables with one administration block for staff. In such a small space, we had to be creative with how and where we played. At break times and P.E., students played on artificial turf and even sometimes climbed the walls and rails around the edge of our PUDO (pick up drop off) area. We also took advantage of being close to the nature reserve that was just across from the school.

We also had the unique opportunity of watching the various building stages of the permanent structures. It was an unforgettable time in the history of Nukumea.
